Generate Your Background Image with Leonardo AI
Go to Leonardo AI and use the Image Generation tool. Your thumbnail background should be visually striking — a face with an exaggerated expression, a dramatic scene, or a bold visual that communicates the video topic instantly.
"[Your subject] with surprised/excited expression, dramatic lighting, cinematic, studio background, high contrast, photorealistic, 16:9 ratio, YouTube thumbnail style"
Example:
"Man with shocked expression holding laptop, dramatic cinematic lighting, dark background with purple glow, photorealistic, YouTube thumbnail"
Settings in Leonardo AI:
Model: Leonardo Diffusion XL or PhotoReal
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Negative prompt: blurry, watermark, text, low quality
Generate Your Title Text with Ideogram (Optional)
If your thumbnail needs bold text built into the image itself (not added in Canva), Ideogram is the only free AI that renders text correctly. For simple text overlays, skip to step 3.
"YouTube thumbnail, bold white text on dark background reading '[YOUR TITLE]', dramatic, high contrast, professional"
When to use Ideogram instead of Canva text:
→ You want text that looks like it's part of the image
→ You want stylized, artistic text effects
→ You're doing a gaming, reaction, or listicle style thumbnail
When to just use Canva text:
→ Simple bold overlay text
→ You want precise control over font and position
Assemble Your Thumbnail in Canva
Open Canva → Create design → YouTube Thumbnail (1280×720px). Upload your Leonardo AI background image, then add your text, arrows, and branding.
1. Upload your AI background as full-canvas image
2. Add 3-5 word title in bold, high-contrast font (Anton, Bebas Neue, or Impact)
3. Add a bright color block or shape behind the text for readability
4. Add 1 emoji or arrow pointing to the key element
5. Keep 30% of the canvas clean — don't fill every pixel
Free Canva fonts that look pro:
Anton, Oswald, Bebas Neue, Montserrat Bold
The 3-Second Test
Before downloading, do the 3-second test: shrink the thumbnail to the size it appears on mobile (about 2cm wide). Can you still read the text? Can you tell what the video is about? If not, simplify.
Text too small → increase to 80pt minimum
Too much happening → remove 1-2 elements
Low contrast → add a dark overlay behind text
No focal point → crop tighter on the main subject
✅ Download settings in Canva:
Format: PNG (higher quality than JPG for thumbnails)
Size: 1280×720px (YouTube recommended)
A/B Test Your Thumbnails
YouTube Studio lets you test 2-3 thumbnails on the same video and shows which one gets more clicks. Use this free feature — it's the fastest way to learn what works for your audience.
1. Upload your video with Thumbnail A
2. In YouTube Studio → go to your video → Edit
3. Click "Test & Compare" under the thumbnail
4. Upload Thumbnail B (and C)
5. YouTube automatically shows each version to different viewers
6. Check results after 48h and keep the winner
What to test:
→ Face vs no face (faces almost always win)
→ Text color: white vs yellow
→ Dark vs bright background
